Our chapter members meet monthly, from September through May. Our meetings include speakers on topics of interest to the group. Recent speakers have presented programs on the Florida Highwaymen artists, Mary McLeod Bethune, current guidelines on preventive care for women, recycling, Native American medicine, and Florida gardening. Our patriotic and historic preservation endeavors included cleaning the headstones and grounds of Gethsemane and Hillside Cemeteries and indexing American Revolutionary War era records.
Captain James Ormond Chapter, NSDAR, 118 members keep busy working to further DAR's goals of patriotism, historic preservation, and education. Captain James Ormond Chapter, NSDAR, is an active service organization that supports many community projects.
We have recently received approval to place a marker for the American Revolutionary War Patriot Francisco Xavier Sanchez in Sanchez Park in Ormond Beach.
Our many committees present a range of volunteer opportunities that are as varied as our members' interests. Members participated in Wreaths Across America, Memorial Day and Veterans' Day ceremonies, and marked Flag Day, the National Day of Prayer, and the Fourth of July. The Ormond Beach Mayor gave our chapter a proclamation for Constitution Week and members set up a display in the Ormond Beach Library. We decorated a tree for Christmas at the Casements and had a booth at the Celtic Festival.
Members cleaned up beaches and planted trees, community and pollinator gardens, sent dozens of care packages to deployed soldiers through Project Patriot, and supported our local Veterans Museum and Education Center. Additionally, we donated to Southeastern Guide Dogs, Horses for Heroes, Camp Corral, and the Florida State Parks Longleaf Pine Project. Our Daughters volunteered their time at churches, local schools, and historic societies .
In support of education, members walked for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, donated to PACE Center for Girls, gave scholarships to students at Daytona State College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, donated books and flags at local schools, supported the Hindman Settlement School in Appalachia, and gave awards for DAR Good Citizens and an American History essay contest.
